The perioperative dialogue is the pre-, intra- and postoperative meeting between the nurse and patient in connection with the latter's surgery. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 patients and 20 nurses, in which they described their experiences of perioperative dialogues.

Data from the interviews were analysed according to grounded theory. Results The results showed, that by using the perioperative dialogue, a continuity of care is created, both from a patient and nurse perspective. Structured validated self-reporting measures may be used systematically before and after surgery in order to evaluate the perioperative dialogue using quantitative measures.
